Aleksandr N. Konovalov

Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, DMSc, Honorary Director of the N.N. Burdenko National Medical Research Center for Neurosurgery, Ministry of Health of Russia; Head of the Department of Children’s Neurosurgery at the Russian Medical Academy of Continuous Professional Education, Ministry of Health of Russia; Professor of the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University; President of the Association of Russian Neurosurgeons; Vice-President of the World Federation and European Association of Neurosurgical Societies.

The main subjects of Dr. Konovalov’s scientific research are neurosurgery, neurology, and clinical physiology of the nervous system; surgery of brain aneurysms, tumors of the sellar/chiasmatic and pineal regions, brain stem. His PhD dissertation was called “Memory disorders in clinical picture of aneurysms of the anterior communicating artery” (1964), DMSc dissertation ‒ “Surgery of arterial aneurysms of the brain” (1972).

Dr. Konovalov’s decades-long research was dedicated to development of basic and practical aspects of neurosurgery, neurology, and clinical physiology of the nervous system. He scientifically proved, developed, and implemented a new approach ‒ microsurgery which not only allowed to access any brain structure and area of the intercranial space for sparing surgical intervention, but also expanded modern clinical physiology and pathophysiology of the human pituitary-hypothalamic region and brain stem. He has supervised research on morphology, pathophysiology, surgery of brain tumors; brain vascular diseases; head trauma; development of the current theory of compensatory and adaptive processes of the central nervous system in focal brain lesions underlying the concept of effective system of rehabilitation treatment.

Dr. Konovalov was one of the pioneers of practical implementation of endovascular surgery, endoscopic, functional neurosurgery. He has authored more than 400 scientific texts including 15 monographs, guidelines, reference books, and textbooks published in Russia and abroad (h-index 20).

Dr. Konovalov serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Burdenko’s Journal of Neurosurgery, member of editorial boards of several international specialized journals. He has founded a scientific school; under his supervision, more than 40 PhD and DMSc dissertations were defended.
